Introducing the All Tomato Socks — my first sock pattern!

I’m giving you an All Tomato, meaning you give me the whole tomato or else. —Troy Barnes

I’m a tomato lover at heart. Even as a child, I loved to snack on cherry tomatoes until my mouth was sore and my stomach ached. I love them in all forms — plain, with mozzarella and basil, salted, on toasted bread, you name it. I see a tomato, I eat it.

Tomatoes appeal to me in more than just taste. They ooze summertime freshness and smell amazing straight off the vine. If you’ve ever grown your own tomatoes, you know exactly what I’m talking about. They also remind me of one of my favorite episodes of Community (S03E14), in which Troy Barnes, king of malapropisms, issues Abed Nadir an “All Tomato”: Abed must surrender the territory of Pillowtown to Troy’s Blanketsburg, or else it’s all-out war.

With the All Tomato Socks, I’m paying homage to my love for all things tomato, from my head to-ma-toes (sorry). Available in four sizes, these socks will add the perfect pop of color to any adolescent or adult wardrobe.

The All Tomato Socks are knit from the cuff down and feature an all-over colorwork motif of tomatoes in various sizes, plus a bonus colorwork chart that spells “TOMATO” across the toe. They’re intended to be knit with three colors, although you could add more if you felt like really showing off levels of tomato ripeness. The forethought/afterthought heel construction makes it easy to add an extra pop of contrast (and, if you ever wear your heels thin, they’ll be all the easier to repair!).

As of September 16, 2025, the All Tomato Socks are available for purchase on Ravelry! Please consider checking them out and knitting your own pair. This pattern was a blast to design and a joy to create!

Thank you to my wonderful pool of test knitters who helped spot check my math and provided me with valuable feedback for my first pattern.
