i love my little pony bc there will be a pony named pickle barrel on a pickle farm and they’re like “i wonder what my cutie mark will be” —Riley Farmer, Twitter (@rileysauruss)
Pickles are one of my favorite snacks. I once wrote a page-long entreaty to a pickle company begging them to revert to their original recipe because the jars I had just bought were different and I didn’t like it. They changed it back and sent me free pickle coupons for my troubles. I do not play about my pickles.
That said, I’m also extemely pick(l)y when it comes to which pickles I like. I prefer them whole or speared, never sliced unless fried, never on burgers but always as relish in deviled eggs, so on and so forth. My favorite brand of pickles is the Wickles Dirty Dill Spears because they remind me, both texture- and taste-wise, of the spicy pickles my grandma used to can. They also inspired the color palette for my newest sock pattern, the Pickle Barrel Socks.
Available in four sizes to fit foot circumferences 8–11 inches (20–27 cm), the Pickle Barrel Socks are worked from the cuff down with an all-over colorwork motif of whole pickles. The pattern provides a bonus word chart spelling “PICKLE,” which can be placed at the top of the leg or the bottom of the foot. It also offers an option to replace the accent colors within the pickle motif with purl bumps — for that extra pickley texture.
The forethought/afterthought heel construction makes it easy to add an extra pop of contrast (and, if you ever wear your heels thin, they’ll be all the easier to repair!).
As of November 1, 2025, the Pickle Barrel Socks are available for purchase on Ravelry! Please consider checking them out and knitting your own pair. This pattern was a blast to design and a joy to create!
Thank you to my wonderful pool of test knitters who helped check my math and provided me with valuable feedback.
